My apologies for so many cross-postings, but this has been discussed
in all of the above newsgroups, so....

Below is the dired.el file I have modified to get dired to correctly
understand VMS directory names, e.g. NEXT.DIR means [.NEXT].  I have
included the entire file at the request of several people who say they
don't have the original. If you find any bugs in this behavior, PLEASE
let me know.  There is one line you may have to repair (it is more
than 80 characters long) find "(defvar dired-match-date" and make sure
the regexp string on the following line hasn't been cut in two.

The command 'f' should work on directories, and should properly
understand [-] even from the top level directory (i.e., disk:[dir][-]
becomes disk:[000000]).  The 'r' command also works.  I don't remember
if I've changed anything else.
