[comp.emacs] VMS, Gnu, and Emacs

RAMO%AC.DAL.CA@MITVMA.MIT.EDU (Richard Outerbridge) (08/22/89)

   GNU Emacs 18.41.41 of Tue Feb 2 1988 on DAL1 (vax-vms)
   ------------------------------------------------------

I'm using a VAX 8800 running VMS which has the above version of GNU EMACS
installed on it. It was put on by some DEC techs and is not supported by anyone
here. I'm using it as an editor, but it won't do a whole bunch of things that
it is supposed to do (spell-checking, Dired, mail, compiling, TeXing, etc.). Is
this a general limitation of EMACS on VAXi, an old version, or bad
installation? I'd like to do what I can to get as much out of it as is
possible.

Another minor problem I have is that it won't let me in if I'm using a VT102
(a VT100 is ok), so I usually have to lie to it.

If you have experience with VMS Gnu Emacs I'd appreciate hearing from you on
this.

Thanks

p.s. How does one get the version text from the mini-buffer to a file like
     this one?
