If you're using GNU Emacs, typing `M-x ov' will toggle you in and out
of overwrite mode.

M-xoverwrite-mode

overwrite-mode:
Toggle overwrite mode.
With arg, turn overwrite mode on iff arg is positive.
In overwrite mode, printing characters typed in replace existing text
on a one-for-one basis, rather than pushing it to the right.

Of course you COULD bind it to some key sequence...
