Does anyone know if gnu emacs loads its own init file before ~/.emacs? I always get "Error in init file" whenever emacs starts up. If I use the -q option and then load-file ~/.emacs I get no error message. Has anyone else had similar problems? -- Milt Tinkoff | "The lottery is a tax Silicon Graphics Inc. | on the stupid." milt@waynes-world.esd.sgi.com | -Ed Mao

I had a problem with similar *sounding* symptoms when I had my USER
environment variable set to 'Matt Atterbury' rather than my login name
'matt'.
