[comp.emacs] scrolling in emacs

milt@sgi.com (Milt Tinkoff) (08/18/90)

Does anyone know if gnu emacs loads its own init file before ~/.emacs? I
always get "Error in init file" whenever emacs starts up. If I use the -q
option and then load-file ~/.emacs I get no error message. Has anyone else
had similar problems?

I had a problem with similar *sounding* symptoms when I had my USER
environment variable set to 'Matt Atterbury' rather than my login name
'matt'.
