I am new to using emacs (and USENET) and have some problems and questions. I would appreciate it if someone could help me. First, when I try to use rnews, the program goes through all the newsgroups as though it is collecting new messages, but then is gives me the message "No news is good news." even when the UNIX news reader displays new messages. Second, in Mail mode C-\ is not interpreted as C-s, even though I have a (load "flowctrl") line in my .emacs file. This is annoying because it does not allow me to send a message without quitting. Third, is there any way to set up the spell checker so that it ignores words in all caps, words containing periods (such as mail addresses) and possibly to set up a user dictionary of words which I use frequently but which are not in the dictionary emacs uses? And is there any way when emacs asks to edit a replacement for a word to see the text before editing the replacement? (Sometimes I'm not sure what the word was supposed to be.) Maybe this is wishful thinking, but is there any way of getting emacs to suggest a replacement? Fourth, is there any way to fill a paragraph just from the cursor to the end of the paragraph? (Sometimes I want words separated by spaces to remain on the same line, and filling the whole paragraph messes that up.) Finally, is there any way of killing a region without "killing" it? In other words, can C-w C-y be replaced by a single command? If anyone has any suggestions for any of these things I would appreciate some advice. As I said, I am not familiar with emacs, so I would appreciate it if any suggestions for doing anything fancy included an explanation of how to do it. Thanks in advance for any help. Please respond by mail and if anyone reading this is having a similar problem, I would be happy to forward to him/her any useful tips I receive. If I receive anything which I think would be of general interest, I'll post a summary. Gil Citro citro@husc9.harvard.edu Gil Citro citro@husc9.harvard.edu |\/\/\/| | | | (o)(o) | _) | ,___| | / ____\
