[comp.emacs] Why the boycott is necessary

rms@AI.MIT.EDU (Richard Stallman) (10/20/90)

If you want to boycott Apple, then encourage people not to
buy Apple in the first place.

The refusal to support GNU software is our most effective way of doing
this. People have told me this convinced them they didn't want A/UX.

It's impossible to separate the actions that aid present users of A/UX
from those that encourage others to purchase it. We must not
exaggerate the importance of giving a few individuals short-term help.
The important issue is defeating Apple and what Apple stands for.
This will affect us for the rest of our lives.

The world is too small not to help out those we can.

The world is full of people who could use your help in ways that won't
aid Apple. There's a certain amount of effort you want to spend
helping people. If you feel it wrong to decrease the help you give,
which is an admirable feeling, help someone else in some other way.
