[comp.emacs] GNU Emacs on the Risc System/6000

marc@ibmpa.awdpa.ibm.com (Marc Pawliger) (11/20/90)

OK, here's the scoop:

Folks at IBM Cambridge have been dealing with the FSF and have given
them patches for gnumacs on the '6000. I don't believe that an unexec
that works was among these patches. See previous posts Re: movable text
segments on the '6000 for why this is not an easy thing to do. The
Cambridge folks are also not yet on the net, so don't expect to hear
from them here.

There is a rumor that an unexec that does work has been done. I have not
seen it or heard from anyone who has used it. The fact that the '6000 loads
in the loadup.el-referenced .elc files _very_ quickly makes waiting for
a working unexec at least bearable.

The IBM Internal version of gnumacs is the vanilla 18.55 using m-ibmr2.h
and s-aix3-1.h that have already been posted here and been sent to FSF.
The IBM version also has some fixes for a Yellow Pages bug and support
for IBM's HFT (High Function Terminal) key sequences. These fixes have
also been sent to FSF.

So the best thing I can say is

1) get the m- and s- files and compile vanilla 18.55 and deal with the
fact that a working unexec isn't included.

2) wait for version 19 that should have all the '6000 support in it,
   perhaps including a working unexec.

These are only my opinions, not IBM's etc etc etc.

P.S. What do the FSF folks have to say about this? (I know you're out there,
     I can hear you breathing...)
