When I type M-x shell I get the following message in my *shell* buffer: Warning: no access to tty; thus no job control in this shell... and then my shell prompt. This message has one or two unpalatable consequences. Can anybody tell me what's going on and how to fix the problem? I have been running shells in Emacs for some time, and this started to happen just a couple of weeks ago. I am running GNU Emacs 18.55.2 in a Sun 4/490 SunOS 4.1; my login shell is bash, and my Emacs shell is csh. Thanks so much in advance. JCA vanadis@cs.dal.ca

Thanks very much to all those who suggested possible causes of the problem and fixes thereof. It all boiled down to a missing /dev/pty*, which my sysadm promptly restored. Thanks a lot. JCA vanadis@cs.dal.ca
