[net.music] 'lectric guitar advice, please

woodburn@uiucdcsp.CS.UIUC.EDU (09/28/85)

--------------------------------------------------------------

I'd appreciate some advice on buying my first electric guitar.

My musical background is mainly piano, but I've been banging
around on an old classical guitar for the past few months.
As a result, I have a solid background in music theory, I can
pick out a few chords, and I know the fingerboard fairly well.

I'll be playing mostly blues and jazz. Favorites of mine are
B. B. King, George Benson, and Earl Klugh.

What I'm really looking for is something to fool around with in
my free time. At the most, I'd like to jam with a few friends.
My ambitions aren't that great, but most of the people that I've
talked with still say "don't scrimp." They recommend buying a
good guitar now that'll hold its value, then selling it in a few
years and buying a great guitar.

Any tips or recommendations? Please mail them to me. I'll be
happy to return a summary of the responses to anyone who wants it.

P.S. I originally posted this to "net.music.guitar", but that
group seems pretty quiet (like dead). Doesn't anybody read it?

I would recommend looking at the Fender Bullet series of guitars
(especially if your budget is tight). They offer a good (not great, but
good) product for an excellent price. Another suggestion is to keep an
eye out for a used Fender Strat. (provided that it is in good shape and
at a good price). The Gibson ES series are kindof nice (if you enjoy
that type of sound). I would STRONGLY recommend buying a used one if you
are interested in one in this line. The ES series is known for it's neck
problems. I therefore suggest that you get one that is at least 4 years
old and have the neck checked out by an expert. If it's gone for 4 (or
more) years without neck trouble it's probably gonna last for a while
without giving you any trouble.

BTW, if you happed to see a used Gibson ES345 for sale, let me know.

P.S.
I didn't see your note posting to net.music.guit. You might want
to verify that you can in fact post to that group.
