Rakesh 'asks':

    I am trying to provide standard X command line arguments when
    running X version of emacs under X11R4, but it seems, Emacs
    does not understand any arguments except `-display'. For example,
    I can not define its geometry or change the default fonts.
    I have also tried changing these parameters from the .Xdefaults file.

Use  -w  instead of  -geometry.

I.E.  emacs -w 81x67+160+0

There is man page for emacs in  $EMACS/etc/emacs.1   which answers your problem.
If you don't get it by  'man emacs', call your system administrator, tell
him/her where the file is and have him/her install it.

The newest emacs-release 18.57 (!)  has a man page dating  Nov.1990
which gives more detail about the X11 R4 interface.
This will also be in 18.56 but NOT in 18.55.

Hm, I think I just include it here.
You can make a hardcopy (at least on most Berkeley lik UNIX systems (e.g. SUN))
by making the following to a file 'emacs.1',
and then
	psroff -man emacs.1 &

When you specify a font, be sure to put a space between the
switch and the font name.

There is a mailing list, bug-gnu-emacs@prep.ai.mit.edu on the internet
(ucbvax!prep.ai.mit.edu!bug-gnu-emacs on UUCPnet), for reporting Emacs
bugs and fixes.  But before reporting something as a bug, please try
to be sure that it really is a bug, not a misunderstanding or a
deliberate feature.  We ask you to read the section ``Reporting Emacs
Bugs'' near the end of the reference manual (or Info system) for hints
on how and when to report bugs.  Also, include the version number of
the Emacs you are running in \fIevery\fR bug report that you send in.

Do not expect a personal answer to a bug report.  The purpose of reporting
bugs is to get them fixed for everyone in the next release, if possible.
For personal assistance, look in the SERVICE file (see above) for
a list of people who offer it.
