Emacs is an operating system. I hope that clears things up. :-> Except it isn't, it's only the user interface :-). The nice thing about this is that as far as the user (me) is concerned it doesn't (or at least shouldn't) matter what O/S is under the user interface. I.e. the user interface, in many respects, is MORE IMPORTANT than the Operating System for most users.

Various people have given there thoughts on 'What is Emacs', so I thought I would contribute mine also... Emacs is a way of life, and if your life happens to include editing... it's in there. Eric (eric@cs2.wsu.edu)

This is a total novice question, but I have nowhere else to go. PLease bear with me, I need answers to the following: -What exactly is EMACS? from what I've heard it is a super powerful text editor distributed freely. True? -How do I get a copy of EMACS? How can I get just the documentation? -Will EMACS run on a VAX under VMS? How? can I run it in my own partition or do I need the system manager to install it? How can I convince him to do that? Since this is such a basic question, please don't post answers here, they'll probably overwhelm everything else. I can be E-mailed at INDE5PY@JETSON.UH.EDU. Thanks for your tolerance of my ineptness, and for any answers I receive.
