[comp.emacs] Managing LaTeX info systems.

Greetings All,

We operate a large Unix system (SGI 4D/240S) with about 1000 registered users,
of whom we typically have about 70 logged on at any one time.

I would like to use LaTeXinfo to address our local documentation needs i.e.
to provide both online and printed notes.

There are however some problems, notably the amount of memory that GNU emacs
uses. Has anybody written any software for browsing info files that does not
depend on GNU emacs? Or alternatively is their some way I can 'cut down' GNU
emacs so it has just enough functionality to display the info files.

We don't use GNU emacs as our general editor because with 40 or so concurrent
session our system would grind to a halt. While I would not expect that many
people to be using the info system at one time it is still a concern.

In a slightly different vein: Does any body have any useful tools for
maintaining a large collection of info files? eg. makefiles etc.

I would also be interested in comments from people who have run GNU emacs
on systems with lots of users. I have heard vague horror stories and have
never dared to let our users loose on it. (We use Unipress emacs which is
bad enough but still about a quarter the size of GNU.)

Thanks, Russell.
