[comp.emacs] what is free

katz@ISI.EDU (Alan R. Katz) (03/23/91)

It appears to need saying again:

Free as used in the Free Software Foundation DOES not mean Free as in
zero cost, but Free as in FREEdom.

TANSTAFL, afterall.

Both foundations make great claims, but use non-common usage definitions
for their names to disguise their true identity and give the appearance
of a much higher cause than they truely represent? :-)

I think the cause of freedom is much higher than that of reducing prices.

And since when did freedom cease to be a common usage of the word
"free"?

Anyway, let's move any further discussion of this issue to
gnu.misc.discuss. That's the proper place to discuss your opinions of
the FSF's goals and policies.
