[comp.bugs.sys5] ATT 3B20 question: re crypt and salt

cp420@sdcc15.UUCP (Kuykendall) (04/22/88)

The encrypt function on 3B20 is not DES, but the crypt IS. Or is ALMOST
and I'm looking for a true/refined DES alg. The crypt has two elements one
of which is 'salt' which "is used to disrupt the DES alog. in one of 4096
differant ways... (I figure 4096 is a-zA-Z0-9./ set ^2 for probability).
Now does anyone know what the do to it when they "perturb it" or what I reallly
need is a salt thats has no effect so I can encode w/ it w/o worry of losing
all my data 8^]... I realize this isn't REALLY a bug but this is the only sys5
net I know of... mail or post if anyone has any suggestions...
		-Thanks in advance....
