The function a seems to just return 0 when given a zero and otherwise return PI/4 . This bug is present in some systems running 4.1 , and 4.3 ( not in 4.2 , that I know of ) . Also ,it seems to appear in Ultrix 2.0 but not in Ultrix 1.2.
