While you're playing with expreserve, check to see if it's still
setuid, and using something like popen("mail", "w") to inform the
user of its actions.  If so, make sure you don't accidentally
leave an executable shell script named "mail" in the current
directory, and then induce a vi crash :-) ...

This was fixed in 4.2bsd.
