[net.records] Titanic help wanted

david@varian.UUCP (10/14/83)

I'm trying to find out information about a song about the Titanic
(not the usual one that everyone knows "it was sad oh it was sad...").
The version that I'm thinking of has a frequent refrain:
fare you well Titanic fare you well

I seem to connect it with Leadbelly somehow, but I'm not sure.
But I am also interested in finding out about a recording of it that I heard
once (on the Dr. Demento show) that was recorded in the 60's or early
70's and contains a long story in connection with the song, something
similar to the way Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant is done. (the whole
thing last for 20 minutes or so).

If this strikes a bell for anyone, I would appreciate hearing from you:
either confirming my suspicion that the version of the song was originally
Leadbelly's, or any information regarding the song/story recording (who
did it, label, whether it's still in print, etc.).
Thanks in advance.

The song you're referring to is "The Ballad of the Titanic", or
some such title, and is by Jaime Brockett (spelling?). I picked
up the album its on in college after hearing this song. The rest is
very mild and uninteresting folk/rock. The song in question is pretty
funny, if long. If anyone wants more info, I'll check my record collection
for the exact album title, code, company, etc.
