We have a Vax 11/750 running 4.3 BSD. Since there is only one machine running 4.3 BSD and we are not connected to the Internet, we decided not to run the nameserver (/etc/named). We don't have a /etc/named.boot, so that /etc/named will just exit upon startup. When applications tries to consult the nameserver, they will fail and fall back to /etc/hosts. Sounds good? So far so good. Recently, the MTBF has gone down to about 7 days. After about 6 to 7 days, some applications seem to go berzerk. Under normal circumstances, the code in gethostbyname() should fail in recvfrom(). But after about 6 to 7 days, it starts failing in select() reporting a "timeout" instead. (Note: I got all these by compiling gethostbyname(), res_send(), etc. with DEBUG flag.) The network is still working. People who have rlogin'ed can still work. New users cannot rlogin. The vax is still forwarding packets between networks. (Yes, our vax acts as an IP-router.) But it does not answer to ping anymore. Has anyone seen a similar problem? Please reply via e-mail to uunet!daisy!pkl since I'm not a regular comp.bugs.4bsd reader. And we thank you for your support ... -- -- Peter K. Lee (...!uunet!daisy!pkl), Daisy/Cadnetix Inc.
