The computer science department at Victoria University of Wellington has an open post-doc position for someone to work in the general area of expert systems. The position is tenable for up to two years. The department is currently working on a project to build an expert system for management consulting in manufacturing companies. The primary goals of the project are to investigate the kinds of knowledge required for consultative problem solving systems, especially strategic knowledge and qualitative simulation, and to discover ways of integrating formal analysis techniques with heuristic techniques. We also have a project to build a teachable robot system that can combine learning procedures from examples with the ability to reason about those procedures to construct more complex procedures without a teacher. In 1987, there will be three faculty members and a number of graduate students involved in these projects.
