Distinguished Visitor in Artificial Intelligence

The Department of Computer Science at the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has support for a Distinguished
Visitor in Artificial Intelligence for the 1987/88 academic year.
The length of the visit is negotiable and the remuneration will
be competitive.
The Department has a 40-year history in computer science and
recently has seen a major growth in AI activity. The eight
faculty in AI have research interests that span the breadth of
the field, including vision, knowledge-based software engineer-
ing, machine learning, biomedical expert systems, planning, qual-
itative physics, and representation and reasoning. Related
research in the department includes work on automated program-
ming, computer-aided design, functional and logic programming,
rewrite systems, theorem proving, and the theory of inductive
inference. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
has additional faculty in AI specializing in vision and machine
learning. There is also extensive multidisciplinary research
with members of the departments of Educational Psychology,
Linguistics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Information Science,
Philosophy, and Psychology. The position is partially funded by
an interdisciplinary Cognitive Science/Artificial Intelligence
program, which is part of the University's commitment to growth
in the area, soon to be recognized in the Beckman Institute. The
University expects to make additional permanent and visiting
appointments in the future.
