I've always liked my thesis advisors (Tom Dietterich) definition of AI. It works so much better then any other I've seen. AI is the study of ill-defined computational methods. This explains why once we understand something it is no longer AI, it also explains why AI does not spend a lot of time trying to verify that "this is the way OUR brain does it".
