Can anyone give me a reference to a book that will explain integrated circuits in terms that an educated layman can follow, and also give some history of the invention, development, commercialization, international competition, etc., for "chips." Thanks in advance.

The classic text is "Introduction to VLSI Systems", by Lynn Conway and Carver Mead, ISBN 0-201-04358-0. This is a text for a course requiring no prior knowledge of IC technology in which students design their own custom ICs and have them fabricated. A good introduction to standard off-the-shelf ICs and what to do with them is "The Art of Electronics", by Horowitz and Hill, ISBN 0-521-23151-5. This is a book for scientists, primarily physicists, who need to "do electronics". An excellent way for smart people to get started in electronics. John Nagle
