[Line-eater gives birth in captivity. Film at 11.] Neural networks seem to be one of the hot new technologies in AI. We now have them duplicating vision, smell, et al and doing horrid calculations like the infamous Travelling Salesman problem. But does anyone see these beasties as potentially being actual thinking machines? Anyone firmly believe they can't? Not coincidentally (you knew there was a catch, didn't you?), I'm doing a research paper on the topic. References for or against are welcome (so far my searches have turned up nil). Prefer email -- no need to clog the net with my problems. However, if you want to debate the issue, post at your discretion. I for one would be interested in seeing who thinks what and why. Thanks, and happy Holy-Warring :-). sbigham -- Scott Bigham "The opinions expressed above are Internet sbigham@dukeac.ac.duke.edu (c) 1988 Hacker Ltd. and cannot be USENET sbigham@dukeac.UUCP copied or distributed without a ...!mcnc!ecsgate!dukeac!sbigham Darn Good Reason."
