Thanks for the interest - what happened was that earlier we had a dump process hang & I couldn't get rid of it - 'I' status in 'ps -ax'- without rebooting - I thought I had a similar animal this time around but when I rebooted the boot hung after a "tmscp0:random interrupt ignored" message directly after the tms 'discovery' message - I yanked the tape controller & I can boot without error - new controller due on Monday & I hope that's the fix I had tried checking out (& resetting) the permission level and reading MAKEDEV to make sure nothing had gone awry - I deleted & re-mknod'd the device just to be sure - I did all this before rebooting on the off chance I might learn something - The first reboot (before I yelled for help) went ok. Of course this all happened at 6pm - The next day I did it all over again to be sure I hadn't blown it by being in a hurry. This time the first reboot hung - I tried a few more times (one successful) to eliminate any random randomness - "must be hardware - this can't be my fault" I REALLY appreciate the response to the obviously critical problem of not being able to do backups and especially want to thank the DEC guys who care about their baby. We think its the cat's meow ouselves. hurf
