I agree, Charniak and McDermott's text is as you say.
I like "Artificial Intelligence Through Prolog" by Neil C. Rowe.
His text is far from dry, and easy to follow. Rowe's book doesn't
go into as much detail, but I think it's a great text for an
introductory course.
