Workshop Announcement - Call for Participation

Workshop on Cognition, Biology and Robotics

German National Research Center for Computer Science (GMD)
Sankt Augustin, FRG, June 18-20, 1990

Biology is increasingly influencing the attempts to build artificial cognitive
systems. Recent practical and theoretical work on robotics shows the potential
of exploiting principles of nature for various aspects of robotics such as
control structures or mechanical design. In particular, it is expected that
progress in understanding the organizational principles of biological systems
will lead to new models of cognition. Future work in Artificial Intelligence
and related fields will make intensive use of this knowledge.

With this workshop we aim at bringing together researchers working on various
aspects of biologically inspired control structures of intelligent agents.

Following researchers have been invited and confirmed to give a talk about
their ongoing research:

- Prof. U.Baessler (Dept. of Biology, University of Kaiserslautern, FRG)

- Prof. T.Boesser (Dept. of Applied Psychology, University of Muenster, FRG)

- Dr. O.Breidbach (Dept. of Applied Zoology, University of Bonn, FRG)

- Prof. R.Brooks (Artificial Intelligence Lab, MIT, USA)

- Prof. H.Cruse (Dept. of Biological Cybernetics, Univ. of Bielefeld, FRG)

- R.Lohmann (Dept. of Bionics and Evolution Technology, TU Berlin, FRG)

- Prof. P.Maes (Artificial Intelligence Lab, MIT, USA)

- Prof. D.McFarland (Dept. of Zoology, University of Oxford, UK)

- Prof. B.McGonigle (Dept. of Psychology, University of Edinburgh, UK)

- C.Malcolm (Dept. of Artificial Intelligence, University of Edinburgh, UK)

- Prof. G.Roth (Dept. of Biology, University of Bremen, FRG)

- Dr. T.Smithers (Dept. of Artificial Intelligence, Univ. of Edinburgh, UK)

- Prof. L.Steels (Artificial Intelligence Lab, Free Univ. of Brussels, Belgium)

Areas of interest include:
(Neuro-)Ethology, Cybernetics, Artificial Life, Behaviour-Based Robots,
Emergent Computation.

This list is not meant to be exhaustive.

Registration:
Researchers interested in participation should submit three copies of an
abstract (in English) of no more than five double-spaced pages. You may also
wish to send a reprint of a related publication or reports on promising work
in progress.

Abstracts should reach the organizer no later than February 1, 1990.

Organisation:
The workshop is organized by the Expert System Research Group of the German
National Research Center for Computer Science (GMD) in collaboration with the
FG Konnektionismus of the Gesellschaft fuer Informatik (GI). For sending
abstracts, reserving accomodation or any question concerning the workshop,
