I would like to thank people involved in responding to my question about integrating expert systems with data bases. Here is a summary of all the responses. Ramesh Ravula GE Medical Systems ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Try _Readings_in_Artificial_Intelligence_&_Databases edited by John Mylopoulos and Michael L. Brodie, published by Morgan Kaufmann, copyright 1989. You might save some work by buying an expert system shell which has data base query built in. The one that comes to mind is _Mercury_ by Artificial Intelligence Technologies, Inc., but there are probably others. This one is unique in that the rules can be stored as database objects. Paul Nielsen GE CR&D ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I believe you may be talking about "Intelligent Databases: Object-oriented, Deductive Hypermedia Technologies" by K. Parsaye, M. Chignell, S. Khoshafian, and H. Wong. The book is published by Wiley, 1989. Rich Carnahan Martin Marietta Information Systems Group carnahan@inljeff.den.mmc.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ramesh, If you're thinking of /Intelligent Databases/ by Kamran Parsaye, Mark Chignell, Setrag Khoshafian, and Harry Wong, (C)1989 by John Wiley &sons, ISBN 0-471-50346-0, -50345-2(pbk), $24.95 it's an overly broad overview of Object-Oriented, Expert systems, and hyper-hype stuff. Browse before you buy; it will get dated rapidly. It is one of a batch of books being published in order to sell software as a follow-on. This is not quite my idea of electronic publishing. -- bill ricker /bill ricker/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some Companies supplying expert system shells with a built in data base query: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here's the reference: Neuron Data 444 High St. Palo Alto, CA 94301 415-321-4488 I got this out of the MACINTOSH BUYER'S GUIDE, which you should be able to find in your local bookstore for about $8. They have versions running on PCs, SUNs (and other UNIX platforms), Macs (with a NEAT Hypercard interface), and NeXT. Another possibility for you to look at (I am not familiar with their PC-based products) is INFERENCE, Inc. They have something called ART/IM, which runs on VAXen, PCs, UNIX machines, etc. I THINK I remember hearing that they interface to various DBs, but am not real certain as to which ones. Inference, Inc. (213)417-7997 This is their HOTLINE (support) number; they can refer you to their telemarketing folks. ---Rich Carnahan ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If what you need is an intro to DBMS for AI/ES folk, that (Intelligent Data Bases) might be a good FIRST book! It doesn't seem to assume much of anything, so it doesn't get very far, but it does provide basic descriptions of DBMSs and gives some discussion of how DB, AI, Hype, ES, ... can benefit from integrating // cross-fertilizing with eachother. I'm glad people are noticing that different specialities can learn from what eachother have already discovered. I don't recall any other DB-for-AI titles, but they probably exist. Ah! Ullman's classic DBMS book is now a two or three volume set which also discusses internals of Knowledge Based Systems, so I guess that would be another. Haven't got the final volume yet, myself, but Ullman used to be good, so I assume I'm getting my money's worth ordering it. -- /bill ricker/ wdr@wang.com a/k/a wricker@northeastern.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- email: {att|mailrus|uunet|phillabs}!steinmetz!gemed!ravula or {att|uwvax|mailrus}!uwmcsd1!mrsvr!gemed!ravula
