The creation of the newsgroup described below has already been suggested
in the comp.ai newsgroup. As the replies to the original article were
generally positive, I am posting a formal call for discussion, which
will be followed later by a call for votes, according to the guidelines.
Name: comp.ai.philosophy
Charter: This group is intended for discussing the philosophical aspect
of AI, including the Chinese Room problem, TTT and other related
thought experiments. Other subjects include the question whether
computers can "think" (and what is meant by thinking).
Status: unmoderated
Some readers of the comp.ai group feel that the Chinese Room discussion,
which is responsible for a large part of the activity in the group makes the
group unfit for any "serious" discussion, but others read the group only
because of this discussion.
