[comp.ai] Bit More on Art. Life

SOME ADDITIONAL INFO ON ART. LIFE FROM MY RESPONSE TO BRUCE:

Bruce,

I was about to send you my recommendations for th ARTIFICIAL LIFE 1988 confe-
rence proceedings, but I see that you have already compiled quite a bit of
information on AL. Thanks for collecting and posting this info. Some of it
is news to me. I'm a graduate student studying some aspects of Artificial Life
here at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. I have two more
suggestions for you:

1) Since many AL implementations/experiments are implemented on Cellular
Automata Architectures, CA research is a good place to find AL related
research that might not have made it into mainstream AL literature. In
particular, many AL researchers are actually working in Complex/Non-
Linear Systems organizations (such as Santa FE Institute and here at the
Univ. of Illinois Complex Systems Research Center).

2) Santa Fe Institute can be reached at "email@sfi.santafe.edu".

3) Genetic Algorithms and Classifier Systems are related areas of research
with their own conference, proceedings, and literature.

4) I think the topic of AL deserves its own notes file, but I don't know of
any. I think Chris Langton is most likely to organize one, if we mail
    him enough such requests.

5) I found Richard Dawkins' THE BLIND WATCHMAKER to be a fun, informative
text on the abstract features and power of evolution. I am reading
several other texts on the underlying dynamics of evolution.

Hmm, perhaps I should post a copy of this response to comp.ai. Actually,
I think I will.

Good luck in your AL endeavors.
