CALL FOR PAPERS. IEEE EXPERT SPECIAL TRACK.
                 FUNCTIONAL REPREPRESENTATION AND MODELING.

The goal of this series of articles is to identify approaches to
device understanding which leverage known purposes of the device as an
organizing principle for causal device knowledge. Model-based
reasoning is a rapidly growing sub-field of AI whose importance is
underscored by the inability of totally compiled systems to deal with
novel problem solving situations. As the devices modeled become
increasingly complex, there is expanding pressure to provide
theoretical principles by which device knowledge can be organized for
efficient use during problem solving.

A growing body of research centers on using the known functions of a
device as indices to causal understanding of how the device "works."
The results of Functional Representation and Modeling have typically
leveraged this organization of causal understanding to produce
tractable solutions to inherently complex modeling problems.

Topics appropriate for this special track include theoretical analyses
yielding the appropriate vocabulary for discussing devices from a
functional viewpoint, applications of a functional approach to
model/solve actual domain problems, and knowledge acquisition based on
a functional perspective.

In general, this special track will focus on recent research results
in Functional Representation and Modeling.
