I am looking for pointers to universities that have PhD programs in Cognitive Science (as opposed to offering Cog Sci in another department or as an interdisciplinary Phd). I am currently aware of: University of California, San Diego MIT I would greatly appreciate any information regarding other universities that offer such programs. The name of a contact person at the university would be useful (an email address would be great). Please respond via mail - I'll post a summary if there is enough interest. Thanks. -- Mike Oliphant UUCP: alberta!herald!telepro!oliphant Internet: oliphant@telepro.uucp FidoNet: (1:140/91) - ZMH only * * Call TelePro, the development system for DIALOG Professional * * Phone: +1 306 249 2352 300/1200/2400/9600/14400 baud HST * FidoNet: (1:140/90) *

You might look into the Cognitive and Neural Systems program of Stephen Grossberg here at B.U., which is taught by researchers at the Center for Adaptive Systems. There are currently six full time faculty members, but the program as a whole is growing rapidly. The research is primarily in five areas - low level visual processing, motor control, speech perception, adaptive behavior, and conceptual & cognitive development, all considered from the perspective of developing mathematical (especially dynamical systems) models of the underlying neural mechanisms. Admission to the program is competitive, (I think everyone accepted last year to the PhD program who got financial aid had average GRE's above 750) but the faculty are excellent, and because they are highly respected, they are in a position to take good care of the students who are admitted. Because Grossberg's previous research is both far reaching and deep, research opportunities abound, and students are encouraged to participate in the work that is being done here. If you'd like more information, please feel free to ask me, or contact the CNS office at the following address: Professor Stephen Grossberg, Director CNS Program Center for Adaptive Systems 111 Cummington Street Boston University Boston, MA 02215 -john
