[comp.ai] Is anybody automating FMEA?

cjp@cs.aber.ac.uk (Chris Price) (09/07/90)

Failure modes and effects analysis is a (fairly tedious) procedure for
deciding what can go wrong with a device or system.

Basically, you examine the effects of failures on components in the device
(simple example: a broken brake cable in a car would cause loss of braking
ability).

It is tedious to perform because components can have several failure modes,
and complex devices will have many components and complicated effects.

On the face of it, automation of the FMEA analysis would be wonderful, but
is very challenging. It would be nice to know of anyone else attempting to
apply AI in to this type of design analysis problem.

If you reply to me, I will summarise the answers (if any) to the net.

Thanks
