[comp.ai] Seeking references to connectionist expert systems

I'm looking for papers on connectionist rule-based systems.  
So far, I've found the following:

   Gallant, S.I.  (1988). "Connectionist expert systems," Communications
      of the ACM 31(2), 152-169.

   Saito, K.  and Nakano, R.  (1988). "Medical diagnostic expert system 
      based on PDP model," Proceedings of the IEEE International
      Conference on Neural Networks, San Diego.

   Touretzky, D.S. and Hinton, G.E. (1985). "Symbols among the neurons: 
      Details of a connectionist inference architecture,"
      Proceedings of the IJCAI, Los Angeles.

      Describes a rule-based system embedded in a connectionist 
      system



Can anyone add to this list, especially with more recent work?

Please feel free to comment on the viability, importance, or 
appropriateness of this work as a PhD thesis topic.
