I've just become aware of CLIPS, a forward chaining production system developed by NASA. A pc version comes with Expert Systems by Giarrantano and Riley. I understand the source and doc is available for $350 from COSMIC, NASA's Computer Management Software and Information Center. Does anyone know an e-mail address for COSMIC? A mac version for CLIPS is on sumex-aim.stanford.edu. Are unix sources by any chance available by ftp? I'd like to be able to use CLIPS on our NeXTs. CLIPS looks like lisp. Is there a pedigogical lisp version that anyone knows about? I'd be interested in having it available for students. Thanks for any info. Roger Kirchner

COSMIC e-mail addresses: cosmic@uga.bitnet (BITNET) service@cossack.cosmic.uga.edu > A mac version for CLIPS is on sumex-aim.stanford.edu. This copy probably should not be here if it has the source code. CLIPS is not in the public domain. > CLIPS looks like lisp. Is there a pedigogical lisp version that anyone > knows about? I'd be interested in having it available for students. I do not believe that a Lisp version is available. One of the reasons that CLIPS was developed was to get away from the portability problems of applications developed in Lisp environments. There is a software tutorial package on CLIPS called CLIPSIT, which is distributed by COSMIC. CLIPSIT does not include the CLIPS source code. -- Mott Given @ Defense Logistics Agency Systems Automation Center, DSAC-TMP, Bldg. 27-1, P.O. CLIPS is more like OPS5 than Lisp. The new version of CLIPS (5.0) is due out sometime early in '91. CLIPS is distributed for the PC or the Mac, but the code is very well behaved and well written. In one day, I ported it to a Vax 780, a Sun 3/50, and a Vaxstation 3100. Pretty impressive. CLIPS is also very fast. I recently posted a speed comparison to comp.ai.shells. -- Scott Turner

I was asked via e-mail to clarify the distribution status of CLIPS. A chat with the CLIPS Help Desk revealed that CLIPS is not in the public domain. If there is a copy on the Stanford machine, it should be removed. The good news is that Austin Codeworks in Austin TX sells a version of CLIPS for approx. $50. I don't know anything more about it than that sentence, so call them if you want more info. -- Scott Turner
