                       Case-Based Reasoning

                         CALL FOR PAPERS

The International Journal of Expert Systems is planning a special
issue in March 1992, covering research in case-based expert systems.
The papers must discuss implemented systems with an emphasis on but
not limited to the following topics:

1. Task and domain selection criteria for implementing a case-based
reasoning system. The use of an existing algorithm and/or method for
index selection, case base organization, similarity assessment, and
case adaptation needs to be justified. Also, the justification for the
development of a new method should be provided when appropriate.
Results illustrating the performance of the existing methods tried in
comparison with the performance of new implemented methods will be
necessary.

2. Performance evaluation of the systems across several dimensions.
Typical dimensions include: precision and recall of retrieval in
general, and as a function of the case base size; appropriateness of
adapted solutions; computational expense of retrieval and adaptation,
and scalability of the system.

3. Knowledge acquisition effort required. The effort should be
classified by the various sources of knowledge (cases, human experts,
book knowledge, non-experts) that were used. Comparisons between the
knowledge acquisition effort for the case-based system and other types
of knowledge-based systems used for the same or similar applications
are encouraged, as are descriptions of tools and methodologies for the
structured acquisition of the necessary knowledge.

4. Integration of the resulting case-based systems with other
knowledge-based or conventional systems and evaluation of the
resulting system's performance. Include a description of how cases
were obtained (existing databases, cases developed from scratch, etc.)
and how they were represented in the CBR system.

All papers will be reviewed quickly. The manuscripts should be sent by
July 1, 1991 to: Evangelos Simoudis, Guest Editor, AI Applications
