Policy Making and Knowledge Systems A Conference at The Claremont Graduate School Claremont, California June 20-21, 1991 This conference is the first public meeting to explore the impact of intelligent computer systems on corporate and public policy making. The program is designed for non-technical senior executives from the corporate, government and non-profit sectors, as well as for managers responsible for advanced information systems who wish to understand the broader potential of the knowledge systems technology. Knowledge systems, or "expert systems," are computer programs that encode human knowledge. They have been commercially available for almost a decade. One of the surprising developments in recent years, as companies mature in their use of the technology, is the impact of these systems on the administration of policy and, ultimately, on its formulation. The goal of this conference is to allow participants to come away with a clear understanding of how knowledge systems can be used in an organization to: - compile policies, procedures and regulatory compliance guidelines into on-line repositories that are more complete, internally consistent, and up-to-date than printed manuals or even human specialists. - embed these policy and procedure knowledge bases into transaction processing systems, on-line interactive forms, decision support systems, and government reporting programs. - monitor the data for opportunities to adjust or reformulate policy. - use the on-line knowledge base as the focal point for discussing and clarifying policy, responding to regulatory changes and capturing employee know-how. - re-engineer work flow, quality assurance and, eventually, the organization itself. Speakers: All of the speakers have been involved in applications of knowledge systems in policy formulation and/or implementation. The speakers are from the following organizations: Arthur Andersen Consulting, Ernst & Young, IBM, Software AG, Aion Corp., Inference Corp., Neuron Data, AI Corp., Institute for the Future, Stanford University, Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., Aetna Life Insurance Co., and Acquire Intelligence Corp. Registration: Registration is by voice mail at (714)757-9848 or by fax at (714)759-0249. The cost is $250 per person.
