[news.misc] Moderation vs. Filtration in comp.sources.misc

merlin@hqda-ai.UUCP (05/30/87)

I begin to wonder about the doings of comp.sources.misc. I
wasn't too happy when it became a moderated group. The short
history of this group suggests that there is a problem here, and I
think action is needed.

We were first told that this group would only filter out the
non-source stuff. For this reason, postings would not suffer the
delay inherent in using comp.sources.unix.

[I wanted to provide quotes for the above, but the relevant
articles have expired.]

Later, Brandon Allbery (the moderator) decided that he would
test programs for machines that he had access to. (See article
2500@ncoast.UUCP) VAX/VMS and other oddball OS :-) programs would
not be tested, but most Unix stuff would be.

Now, we see binaries posted to comp.sources.misc. This has
finally motivated me to act.

Brandon, I think you should revert to the original position.
Filter non-source postings. No testing. No quality assurance.
No guarantee of any sort. Just source, and nothing else.

Of course, that may not be your idea of how to run
comp.sources.misc. If you want to give it up, I'd be willing to
take the job. (I have plenty of spooling space, and reasonably
reliable mail paths.)

Please don't take this as a personal attack. I think you've
made some mistakes, but I don't think you're malicious or stupid.
I invite a public discussion, to include any interested readers.

As time goes on my tolerance level goes down. To steal a quote :

Well Dave (and many others too numerous to quote) you have shown a lack of
information (hopefully not to be confused with intelligence) with all your
complaints about comp.sources.misc.

 > Now, we see binaries posted to comp.sources.misc.
Complaints about binaries showing up in a SOURCE group. E-GADS, call out
the FBI (or better yet the NSA). If you would be kind enough to read the
official (as much as anything is in an anarchy) list of newsgroups you
would find that this is the proper location for source OR binary SOFTWARE.

Oh, Now I See the LIGHT !! Of course it should have gone in comp.binaries !
To which do you refer...
 > Message-ID: <15493@gatech.gatech.edu>
 > comp.binaries.amiga	Encoded public domain programs in binary. (Moderated)
 > comp.binaries.atari.st Binary-only postings for the Atari ST.(Moderated)
 > comp.binaries.mac	Encoded Macintosh programs in binary. (Moderated)
Gee, I guess I don't see and I guess most people don't read even the documents
that we ask neophyte net readers to examine. There is NO binary miscellaneous
group for Brandon or anyone else to post to. Comp.sources.misc is where they
go. If you wish to start such a news group feel free to start collecting
votes (BY MAIL !!) but do not jump on Brandon, who is doing a fine job of
making sure discussions and other garbage stays out of comp.sources.misc.

To borrow a quote again...

Well Dave, I don't think you're stupid either, merely ignorant, a state which
is curable (I hope).
