[news.misc] Query about splitting newsgroups

I am fairly new to USENET, and I am puzzled by questions of whether it is
worth "it" to split a newsgroup.  What does it cost to split a newsgroup,
assuming the total volume of postings remains the same?

One new directory, another entry in the active file, and some
administrative time at the site from whence the newgroup control
message emanates.
