[news.misc] 3.0 news release -- I'm waiting on NNTP and NFS support

eric@snark.UUCP (Eric S. Raymond) (03/07/88)

   For those of you interested...

   1) Erik Fair has a copy of my beta 2.9.6 and is going to vet the NNTP
interface against NNTP 1.5, which he and Phil Lapsley are about to release.

   2) Mel Pleasant is supposed to be incorporating NFS support into a copy
of 2.9.5, but I haven't heard from him on it in a while (are you there, Mel?).

   3) Rich $alz has offered to reserve a comp.sources.unix slot for me.

I've recently added instrumentation code to expire resembling John Gilmore's
mods to C news. And I'm chasing a minor glitch in the reader support
libraries that sometimes skips too many messages when you do an 'n' with
discussion-following enabled. And I'm trying to debug a reader optimization
to cut the amount of memory it uses for discussion trees that occasionally
raises SIGSEGV. Other than these things, the code is very stable.

When the NNTP and NFS changes come back, it will be ready to roll out.
