[news.misc] How do you know if something you post gets posted?

pricejk@lafcol.UUCP (Price Janet K) (03/05/88)

I note that when I post an item to the news it comes to our site
immediately. Sometime later I get a message from the site from which we
get our newsfeed indicating the item has been posted. However, I still
have the uncomfortable feeling--since I have seen no responses to my
items, that somehow they have not made it out into the real world. Is there
any way to find this out? It's my understanding that the way news works
is that when the item I have posted arrives here from outside, the news
program will say "oh, I already know that" and not re-post it here.
What I'd like is some way for me to find out when this happens.

Simple - you do what everyone else does.

You say something really stupid and wait for the flames! :-)

Well, another way you can test without cluttering up the net is to
post with a restricted distribution - say - just your city or state.
Ask your usenet admin for more info. There is also a to.neighbor
newsgroup where neighbor is an adjacent system in the UUCP topology.

If all else fails, post to misc.test with the smallest distribution
that seems to work.

Actually - if you as a news reader have questions about this,
talk to your USENET system administrator. He/She should know of your
concerns.

WHEN IN DOUBT - DON'T POST!

Which, of course, is why you posted this instead of just mailing to the
person asking the question...
