[news.misc] Applying patches to news

I know this is a dumb question,  but here goes anyway....

I have just downloaded the news 2.11 files and all the patches up to
patchlevel 14.  The question is,  how do I apply the patches to the original
sources?

I have a man page on patch(1),  but I'll be dammed if i can get it to work.
