[news.misc] UNIX Today! No. 2

mikea@utoday.UUCP (Mike Azzara) (06/25/88)

There are several goings on in the second issue of
UNIX Today! that you can contribute to! For instance:

        1) We're asking the question: Should there really be only
ONE UNIX standard, or is diversity part of UNIX's richness? We'll
publish your most interesting/provocative responses. Send to:
...uunet!utoday!views (include your phone number for our reality
check).

        2) We're working on a story about the IRS 1706 code,
which is really a pain in the ass for independent UNIX
consultants. Basically, it's driving the small consultant
out of business. We're looking for your opinions on that
and what can be done about it. The reporter working on
the story, Barbara Gengler, can be reached at (516) 562-5925,
or ...uunet!utoday!barb.

        3) We're running a couple of wierd contests for our
"OFF THE NET" column. One is a "Name The OSF's First Product"
Contest and the other is to come up with the best (i.e., funniest) phrases
for the following acronyms: IBM and MIPS. If you have any other
funny/strange acronymious suggestions, send them along.

        4) we're working on a review of Sun's 386i!
Have you got one? Do you like it? Do you hate it? Would
you like to unburden yourself to a sympathetic journalist? Call
Mitch Irsfeld at (408) 252-6191. (FYI: We review products by compiling
experts' opinions, not by faking our own.) Or send mail to:
        ...uunet!utoday!reviews

        5) Are you or your organization aware of any events that
other folks in the UNIX community may want to attend? We're
publishing an "EVENTS" column, so send us the date, location,
what it's about and why anyone would want to attend. Don't
forget to mention the cost, if any. (BTW, we know about UniForums
and stuff like that already. But if you know about a user group
in Lynchburg, Tenn., that is has an interesting speaker lined
up, let us know! Send to: ...uunet!utoday!barb

PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER IF YOU'RE SENDING
something you want us to publish. For legal reasons,
we can't go off and print that stuff without some
        minimal reality check!

BTW: Sorry about the cross-posting of my first msg.
I am a neophyte mail user and was not aware of
proper etiquette. If anyone can help me with advice
on how not to screw up in the future, please let
        me know.

CORRECTIONS: Letters to the editor of UNIX Today!
should be sent to ...uunet!utoday!letters (not "letter"
as I said last time) and product review opinions
should go to ...uunet!utoday!reviews (not "review").
Still the same is ...uunet!utoday!off, for
bizarre and off the wall comments you'd like to see
us publish, and ...uunet!utoday!tips for story tips.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF THE FIRST ISSUE!

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I AM FINALLY POSTING TO THE
        CORRECT GROUP!
