[news.misc] Moderator of the Year award results

roy@phri.UUCP (Roy Smith) (09/20/88)

A few weeks ago, I ran a little poll, asking who people thought the
best newsgroup moderators were. At the time, I pointed out that moderators
do a lot of work and get very little recognition for their efforts, except
when they do something wrong, in which case they get all the recognition
they can deal with! Possibly because I didn't post the poll to the right
newsgroups, it didn't elicit as big a response as I thought it would.
Here's a list of the people who responded:

What I did with the votes was to take a first place vote and count
it as 3 points, a second place vote as 2 points, and a third place vote as
1 point. I simply added up all the points and sorted the results. Note,
many people tried to make life hard on me by getting names wrong or
misspelled, or getting the newsgroup names wrong. I tried my best to fix
obvious errors when I caught them. The far and away winner (and my
personal choice too) was Peter Neumann of comp.risks. Not only did he
amass the most votes, but there were many glowing comments about his
efficiency and impartiality (and several complaints about his puns).

  49 Peter Neumann comp.risks
  15 Rich Salz comp.sources.unix
  11 Brad Templeton rec.humor.funny
   8 William LeFebvre comp.sys.sun
   4 Trish Roberts comp.society.women
   3 Chuq von Rospach rec.mag.otherrealms
   3 Andrew Tannebaum comp.os.minix
2 Jeff Shulman comp.binaries.mac (really should be Roger Long)
   2 J. Storrs Hall sci.nanotech
   2 Brian Reid alt.gourmand
   2 Brandon Allberry comp.os.misc
   1 Evelyn C. Leeper rec.arts.movies.reviews
   1 Chuq Von Rospach comp.text.desktop
   1 Brandon Albery comp.sources.misc

Please don't send me any more votes; I don't want to see them any
more. Perhaps next year, I'll run this again, giving it a wider audience
to increase participation.
