[news.misc] connecting to the net

Sorry to interrupt the flamfest going on here (BTW my vote goes
to Brad).

Can anyone out there send me some info on connecting a system to
the net from scratch. I have friends at other companies that
would like to gain access to the net but I'm not certain what
hardware and software will be required. Also if this is going to
require capital expenses dose anyone have tried and proven
justifications that can be feed to the 'bean counters' (i.e.
management).

Thanx in advance.
  Matt

Experiments should be reproducible - They should fail in the same way.

As far as I know all you need for UUCP is a freindly neighbor a
phone call away, and a system that can run the news/mail software.
I believe the software is all public domain so you just have to find
someone to give you a copy. Finding out where and the intricacies (sp?)
of setting up is a MUCH bigger problem though hopefully someone will
post a writeup to news.newusers on that (we are still fussing/tweeking).

Justifications are another matter, especially security considerations.
We are restricted to dial OUT only for example, I am aware of several
other sites which cannot have modems AT ALL!
Any suggestions out there?
