Due to a bit of emotional overcharge yesterday, when I posted the article about rec.humor.funny from the K-W Record, I neglected the headline, which was perhaps the least nice part of the story. It was: UW computer system used to send racial jokes ================= For the full article, see news.misc. Replies to this message go to the editor of the K-W record, but you MUST follow the letters to the editor rules outlined in postings to rec.humor.funny and news.misc. I have gotten copies of those letters and people have not been following the rules. The paper will discard such letters. But please people, do all you can to not blow this up further. Don't defend racism, or attack the paper with anything but reasoned criticism of their reporting. Don't say that there's other racism in the world, and that this makes net racism OK. As you all know, I have never posted a joke out of hatred. Don't try to explain the net to them. I have done this. Don't use net terms like "flame" or "rec.humor.funny." Do point out that you observed the whole thing and are aware of the full context. At all points, be calm, and reasoned, no matter what you write. And be brief. They like to see around 300 words as a typical letter. If you just want to simply support or oppose me, just do a simple note of that sort, and ask that they keep a count of such simple notes. -- Brad Templeton, Looking Glass Software Ltd. -- Waterloo, Ontario 519/884-7473

"UW to probe racial joke exchange" The "racial joke exchange" in the headline is none other than rec.humor.funny. I suppose some good may come of this. Those who have been regular readers of rec.humor.funny can now see just how inaccurate newspapers can get. Can you trust what the newspapers tell you? -- David Canzi

Just > wondered. Those are separate issues. I could go over the Boston Herald article paragraph by paragraph and demonstrate Mr. Canzi's assertion. That is not necessary, nor is it related to who is right and who is wrong, if there are such people, in this issue. But one other thing it proves is that the media is out there, willing to be manipulated. Taking advantage of it is a dirty trick... Consider this statement from the Herald article: " 'Then, I was threatened when someone sent out the message, "My ultimate goal is eliminate Jonathan Richmond".' " (sic) Jonathan Richmond surely knew, as did the rest of the net, that this was not a threat. (If he believed that, he surely is a fool.) Yet he was willing to turn it into one for the sake of hyping his cause. -mm- -- Mark E. Mallett Zinn Computer Co/ PO Box 4188/ Manchester NH/ 03103 Bus. Anybody reading the expression "racial joke exchange" would think it
specialized in racial jokes, rather than carrying a variety of
different kinds of jokes, some of which use racial stereotypes.
Incidentally, I read this one-liner recently describing a Jewish man
seducing a woman, saying: "C'mere baby. Let me show you where the
rabbi bit me." It was in the KW Record...
