OK, I'm confused. If the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania doesn't own Pennsylvania State University (which, if so, may be why it's not called Pennsylvania Commonwealth University), then who does?* Para un Tejas Libre, Jeff Daiell *And no cutesy answers like, "Joe Paterno". Who *owns* The Pennsylvania State University is a rather complex issue, who *runs* it, is simpler. "CONTROL Control of the institution in vested in a Board of Trustees of thirty-two members. Members ex officio are the Governor of the Commonwealth; the President of the University; the state Secretary of Education; the state Secretary of Agriculture; and the state Secretary of Environmental Resources. Terms of the other trustees are three years. Six trustees are appointed by the Governor, nine are elected by the alumni, six by delegates from county agricultural societies, and six by delegates from county industrial societies." (The Pennsylvania State University Bulletin, 1985, p. 13.) The day to day administration is run by professional bureaucrats and university administrators, much like any other university. As you can see, while theoretically the state of Pennsylvania has a part in the running of PSU, no group (even including the various government officials and Governor-selected trustees together), has a simple majority on the Board. I have no particular interest in or expertise regarding the administration of PSU, but you did ask. Additional discussion should probably go to misc.misc. Richard C. Hoffman
