Now that the year's almost over, I've been wondering a little about what my and other people's favourite albums of the year are. Draw up a list of your favourite n albums of 1983 and mail it to me. Please indicate whether you have ranked them from 1 to n, or whether you have just listed your top n without trying to put them in order. (Put them in order if it's not too difficult.) Also, if you like, you may include a line or two of comments on each album so that when I post the concensus, I can tell people something about them. Hopefully I'll get a lot of replies, because I'm interested in seeing how what's popular on the net compares with what's popular among the masses. As an example, here's my own submission to the poll: Jeff Richardson's top albums of 1983, in order: 1. MIKE OLDFIELD--CRISES: Oldfield tops my list for the 2nd year in a row. He keeps expanding his horizons without undergoing a change in direction. 2. BAUHAUS--BURNING FROM THE INSIDE: Several different influences from hard- core punk to Pink Floyd, plus a lot of original ideas too, but they combine them very effectively. Too bad they broke up. 3. U2--WAR: A concept album of good, powerful rock. U2's best album. 4. THE CURE--THE WALK: More variety than their last 3 albums. They're still the best at creating depressing music, even when they do up-beat stuff. 5. SOFT CELL--THE ART OF FALLING APART: The same great lyrical style, but the music has progressed to where it's at least as important as the lyrics rather than just a background to them. No bad tracks this time either. 6. NEW ORDER--POWER CORRUPTION & LIES: This completes their big change in style to danceable and more upbeat songs, but I'm glad they did it. 7. TEARS FOR FEARS--THE HURTING: I find this one difficult to describe. The lyrics are depressing, but the music isn't really. 8. THOMAS DOLBY--BLINDED BY SCIENCE: Good pop that doesn't sound too commercial. 9. THE POLICE--SYNCHRONICITY: Not as good as "Ghost In The Machine", but I still marvel at the way they remain popular without sacrificing quality. 10. MICHAEL WAITE & EYES--COSMIC WAVE: The first album by a not-too-well- known Toronto band. Sounds like basic pop songs on the surface, but then you realise there's really a lot of great stuff happening.
