Have I not been reading the right books? Could some kind hearted netter please take the time to point me in the right direction...? Have I not been reading the right books? FTP is (one of) the Internet file transfer protocol, specs are in RFC959. Knowing this does you little good, unless you can beg, borrow, or otherwise obtain access to the Internet. Uunet will uucp files it can ftp to its customers on request, send mail to uunet-request@uunet.uu.net for details. You may be able to join a regional NSFnet, but this would cost orders of magnatued more than uunet unless you use the Internet a lot. RFCs can be obtained via the mail server on nic.ddn.mil (was sri-nic.arpa) send mail with "subject: help" to service@nic.ddn.mil for details. -- Bob Larson Arpa: blarson@basil.usc.edu Uucp: {uunet,cit-vax}!usc!basil!blarson Prime mailing list: info-prime-request%ais1@usc.edu usc!ais1!info-prime-request

It is the protocol used to transfer files in a TCP/IP network (e.g. most LANs, in the U.S., and increasingly so in the rest of the world, also in wide area networks.). To do FTP, you usually issue the command 'ftp <internet host>'. Ftp tries to establish a connection to that internet host and if it succeeds, prompts you for a login. This is where the 'anonymous', 'anon' or what have you come in. If a password is required that is also prompted for. Then, having successfully established a session, you can do puts or, (with anonymous ftp being set up for you to GET things) gets to transfer files to and from the called host. (I guess, in UNIX systems, the usual file protections are valid). But please read the manual for ftp on that. (On BSD UNIX it should be possible to type 'man ftp' to get this information) I hope this helps a bit. I also hope it's not too inaccurate.
