[news.misc] A suggestion for monthly Commonly Asked Questions postings

tar@ksuvax1.cis.ksu.edu (Tim Ramsey) (11/27/89)

I'd like to propose that news.announce.newusers be used to distribute monthly
"Commonly Asked Questions" (CAQ) articles for any newsgroup that cares to set
one up. This would be done by someone (Spaf? Another moderator?) who has
time to handle it. The moderator would:

1) Accept CAQ articles. The problem is: who do you accept CAQ articles from?
Anyone, or only Well Known Posters? How do you get to be a WKP? What if
there are 2 or more competing/conflicting CAQ articles?

2) Once a month, or at whatever interval the original sender wanted, cross-
post the CAQ articles to news.announce.newusers and the newsgroup(s) that
   the CAQ article refers to.

3) Accept updates to the CAQ articles, and crosspost diffs between the old
   and new articles.

Whadya think?

I remember posting a similar suggestion to news.announce.newusers a
couple of months back. Anyone know what happened to *that* idea?
IMHO this belongs in n.a.n. Of course it's a good idea. The questions
keep getting asked over and over again, and to each new entrant to
USENET, every question is quite valid.

The only point I might add is that eventually it'll read like the
sysV docs (long), so we might have a simple version on a rotating
n.a.n. posting and an extended version available from the (whoever)
moderator on email request.
