[news.misc] Copyrights and GEnie

ecl@cbnewsj.ATT.COM (Evelyn C. Leeper) (12/22/89)

My experience with GEnie (and Lord knows your mileage may vary!) is that
a sysop saw my reviews in rec.arts.books/rec.arts.sf-lovers, noted they were
copyrighted, and asked permission to {up|down}load them to GEnie. I agreed.

This hardly paints GEnie as the "rapist of Usenet," since I have no doubt that
if I had said no, he would *not* have gone ahead and done it anyway.

It is perhaps true that some sysops may not notice the copyright notices, but
that can be dealt with individually. Why nuke them ahead of time?

This article is *not* copyrighted, you'll note, so people can upload, download,
or sideload it to whatever BB they want.
